What are my exercise and treatment options for back pain that don’t include surgery or pills?

First, you are not alone! According to the experts at Mayo clinic 80% of people will experience back pain at some time in their lives, 20% of which will be chronic pain.

Second, you can exercise, but you need to be cautious. If you are experiencing acute pain from a recent injury, consult your doctor first. Once you are released to exercise, ask for a list of things you cannot do and bring that with you to a physical therapist or exercise specialist (certified trainer). Make sure your practitioner consults with your doctor to confirm their recommendations.

If you have a clear understanding of your back condition and feel confident a doctor visit isn’t necessary, you can visit with a Muscle Activation Specialist for an evaluation of your back. They are licensed in Muscle Activation TechniquesⓇ and can work with an exercise specialist to plan a program for you that gently improves strength in and around your back. You’ll be surprised at how much you can do, when you work with someone experienced who understands and monitors your movement. An exercise program tailored to your back can significantly improve your mobility, reduce your pain and give you confidence in pursuing a healthy, active lifestyle!
