How much training is too much for my student athlete?

Times have changed since we were kids. These days our kiddos have more opportunities at their fingertips than we ever did to get ahead on and off the field. From strength and conditioning to club/travel teams, there is no shortage of options to consider when we want to give our kids an advantage on the field. But...how much is too much? Although there isn’t a simple answer, there is a clear one. Balance. With the opportunities comes pressure for parents and kids alike. Their teenage lives have more complexities than ever, and learning about balance is key to their success. I think I speak for all of us when I say that a child who is happy is more important than a child who scored every point.

First, talk with your child about their goals for sports, academics and family.

At our house, we tackle this at the beginning of every year. We do this so it’s the same time each year and not necessarily related to performance at school or sports. We set goals for our health, our learning and our family.
