What can I do to protect myself from getting sick if I am ready to exercise again?

The interesting thing about this pandemic is that we are each learning to assess our own risk in very individual ways. Some people can check every box on the list of risk factors and not feel compelled to adhere to public health recommendations, yet some are statistically low risk and want to strictly abide by the most conservative approach. That said, be prepared for a wide variation in precautions observed by those around you. Here are a few widely accepted and researched practices that both minimize your risk for getting sick and contribute to your ability to fight off infections:

  • Exercise in a well ventilated area or outside so you can confidently get your heart pumping and your lungs engaged.

  • Proceed at a pace that balances your physical and mental health; if anxiety is getting the best of you it’s okay to test the waters with shorter workouts at first.

  • Get a physical exam with a doctor and ask for an assessment of your “underlying health issues.”

  • Add a cardiovascular screening - heart problems are a key risk factor in COVID-19 as well as countless other infections.

  • Get tested for antibodies to find out if you have been exposed.

  • Sleep enough to restore your body’s engine.
